Applied Materials Business Card Order Center
Apr 2011
An automated business card ordering system for a print shop's largest corporate client — PDF preview, manager approval, and a custom CMS for the print team.
Overview
Pro Print & Services, a printing company, needed a smarter way to handle recurring business card orders for their high-volume corporate client Applied Materials. The manual ordering process was slow and error-prone. I built a web-based order center that automated the workflow end to end — from employee card customization through manager approval and print-ready PDF generation, with a custom CMS so the print team could manage all orders without developer involvement.
My Role
- Title
- Developer
- Context
- Built for Pro Print & Services to serve their Applied Materials corporate account.
- Scope
- Full project ownership — front-end UI, back-end order logic, PDF generation, and the admin CMS.
The Problem
Applied Materials employees ordered business cards through slow, error-prone email back-and-forth — typos, missing approvals, and no self-service preview before print.
What I Built
Business card order form
- Problem
- Employees ordered cards through slow, error-prone back-and-forth.
- Fix
- A web form with live validation for card details.
- Result
- Orders started complete and valid instead of bouncing on typos.
PDF preview
- Problem
- Employees couldn't see the card layout until it was already in print.
- Fix
- Server-generated PDF preview before submit — preview matched print output.
- Result
- People caught layout mistakes before the order went to a manager.
Manager approval workflow
- Problem
- Orders went to print without a gated approval step.
- Fix
- Email-notified manager approval before print.
- Result
- Only approved cards reached the print queue.
Print-team CMS
- Problem
- The print team had no place to track orders, statuses, or approval history.
- Fix
- A custom CMS for Pro Print employees.
- Result
- The shop could manage the Applied Materials pipeline without a developer.
Order history
- Problem
- Order history lived in email threads, not a system of record.
- Fix
- Database-backed order management with full history and status tracking.
- Result
- Any order could be looked up instead of hunted down.
Tech Stack
Outcome / Impact
Reduced manual workload for the print team and sped up ordering for Applied Materials employees — self-service, approval-gated flow replacing email back-and-forth. Internal corporate scale; don't remember exact order volume.
